Definition of "Neutral" |
The point common to all phases of a polyphase circuit, a conductor to that point, or the return conductor in a single phase circuit. / In a normal condition, hence neither positive nor negative. A neutral object has a normal number of electrons (the same number as protons). A current-carrying conductor normally tied to ground so that the electrical potential is zero. In ac power distribution, the conductor that (a) is intentionally grounded on the supply side of the service disconnect and (b) provides a current return path for ac power currents. At ground potential (0 volts) because of a connection to ground. / The point common to all phases of a poly-phase circuit, a conductor to that point, or the return conductor in a single phase circuit. neutral conductor. / (1) a conductor which completes the electric circuit from the load to the source in three-phase Y-connected and single phase AC electric power systems, typically at or near the potential of the earth. |
