Definition of "Peak Inverse Voltage" |
In an electron tube, the maximum negative voltage that can be applied to the plate without danger of arc-over. In a semiconductor diode, the maximum reverse bias voltage that can be applied without reaching the zener (or breakdown) voltage. / [PIV] The maximum voltage applied in reverse direction with-out damage to the semiconductor. / Peak Inverse Voltage or Peak Reverse Voltage refer to the maximum voltage a diode or other device can withstand in the reverse biased direction before breakdown. Also may be called Reverse Breakdown Voltage. |
