Definition of "phase-locked loop (PLL)" |
(1) a circuit for synchronizing a variable local oscillator with the phase of a feedback portion of that oscillator so as to operate at a constant phase angle relative to the reference signal source. May be categorized as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on, order loops according to the number of integrators in the so-called loop filter. The number of integrators is one less than the order of the loop. This loop is used for demodulators, frequency synthesizers, and timing recovery circuits. |
