Definition of "Reactance" |
That part of the impedance that does not consume active power. It is the imaginary part of the impedance. / [X] The opposition offered to the flow of an alternating current by the inductance [XL], capacitance [XC], or both, in any circuit. That part of the total impedance that does not include pure resistance. The imaginary part of the total complex impedance formula; Z = R + jX. The reactance of a capacitor decreases with frequency, while the reactance of an inductor increases with frequency. / Reactance, denoted X, is a form of opposition that electronic components exhibit to the passage of alternating current because of capacitance or inductance. / In radio communications, single-sideband modulation or single-sideband suppressed-carrier is a refinement of amplitude modulation that more efficiently uses transmitter power and bandwidth. / symbol "X". Opposition to current flow without the dissipation of energy. Example: The opposition provided by inductance or capacitance to AC current. |
