Definition of "Sequential Access" |
The reading or writing of data in a sequential order as opposed to random access. / In computer science, sequential access means that a group of elements such as data in a memory array or a disk file or on magnetic tape data storage is accessed in a predetermined, ordered sequence. Sequential access is sometimes the only way of accessing the data, for example if it is on a tape. / A digit representing the sum of the correct digits in a piece of stored or transmitted digital data, against which later comparisons can be made to detect errors in the data. / data stored on devices such as magnetic tape must be accessed by first moving the media to a particular location and then reading or writing the information. Information cannot be accessed directly; a sequential search must be done first. |
