Definition of "simulated annealing" |
an optimization technique that seeks to avoid local minima by allowing the search trajectory to follow paths that not only decrease the objective function but also sometimes increase it. The probability that an increase in the objective function is allowed by the technique is governed by a quantity that is analogous to temperature. The scheme commences with a high temperature, under which the probability of allowing increases in the objective function is high, and the temperature is gradually reduced to zero, and from then on no further increases in the function are allowed. |
