Definition of "single-electron tunneling" |
the name given to very small capacitors with thin insulators so that tunneling can occur through this insulator. When the capacitor is small, it is possible that the energy change for the tunneling of one electron is larger than the thermal energy, so that fluctuations cannot support the tunneling. In this case, an external source must provide the energy needed for the tunneling process, which occurs usually (in these very small capacitors of order < 10–18 F) by the transfer of a single charge from one plate to the other. |
