Definition of "WatchDog Timer" |
A timer used by a cpu that will cause the cpu to reset if the cpu does not service [signal] the watchdog time at certain intervals. If the WatchDog Timer does not receive a signal within a certain length of time it will cause the processor to reset itself. Refer to the block diagram in the right side-bar. / Watchdog timer sometimes called a computer operating properly or COP timer, or simply a watchdog is an electronic timer that is used to detect and recover from computer malfunctions. During normal operation, the computer regularly restarts the watchdog timer to prevent it from elapsing, or timing out. If, due to a hardware fault or program error, the computer fails to restart the watchdog, the timer will elapse and generate a timeout signal. The timeout signal is used to initiate corrective action or actions. The corrective actions typically include placing the computer system in a safe state and restoring normal system operation. / A watchdog timer (WDT) is a device or electronic card that performs a specific operation after a certain period of time if something goes wrong with an electronic system and the system does not recover on its own.A common problem is for a machine or operating system to lock up if two parts or programs conflict, or, in an operating system, if memory management trouble occurs. In some cases, the system will eventually recover on its own, but this may take an unknown and perhaps extended length of time. A watchdog timer can be programmed to perform a warm boot (restarting the system) after a certain number of seconds during which a program or computer fails to respond following the most recent mouse click or keyboard action. The timer can also be used for other purposes, for example, to actuate the refresh (or reload) button in a Web browser if a Web site does not fully load after a certain length of time following the entry of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL). / Echo cancellation are methods in telephony to improve voice quality by preventing echo from being created or removing it after it is already present. In addition to improving subjective quality, this process increases the capacity achieved through silence suppression by preventing echo from traveling across a network. / a simple timer circuitry that keeps track of proper system functioning on the basis of time analysis. If the timer is not reset before it expires, a fault is signaled,e.g., with an interrupt. |
