Definition of "Y-Cable" |
A cable with three ends, with one common end. So that one interface splits in a 'Y' to two different cable ends. A Y-cable could have any type of termination, but a common example is a 3.5mm stereo connector to two RCA connectors [Red, White], or a male 3.5mm connector to two female 3.5mm connectors. A cable splitter, although this usually refers to a component and not a cable; see splitter. / A Y-cable or Y cable is a self describing name of a type of cable containing three ends of which one is a common end that in turn leads to a split into the remaining two ends. When looked upon, a Y-cable can resemble the Latin letter Y. Y-cables are typically, but not necessarily,less than 12 inches, and often the ends connect to other cables. / A second power supply circuit sometimes specified for systems used in critical applications. Redundancy is useful where unexpected power failures can cause a major system to fail, often at great expense. |
