Definition of "Zero Insertion Force Socket" |
A ZIF socket requires no force to install an IC into the socket. A spring actuated level is used to clamp the device in place once it has been installed. Also refer to Socket Manufacturers. ZIF sockets are used with processors mounted on personal computer mother boards and with EPROM programming devices so the components can be easily inserted and removed with out soldiering. Read more on ZIF Sockets and their usage, an example is shown to the right. / Zero Insertion Force socket is the physical way that Intel's 486 and Pentium microprocessors up to Pentium II connect on the computer motherboard to the data bus. As its name implies, the ZIF socket is designed for ease of manufacture and so that the average computer owner will be able to upgrade the microprocessor. The ZIF socket contains a lever that opens and closes, securing the microprocessor in place. / Stateful inspection is a firewall architecture that works at the network layer. Unlike static packet filtering, which examines a packet based on the information in its header, stateful inspection tracks each connection traversing all interfaces of the firewall and makes sure they are valid. |
