The irrigation water may be applied to the
crops by three basic methods :-
(a) Surface irrigation : In this method water is supplied on ground surface. There are number of ways for this purpose. They are : 1. Free flooding : In this water is supplied till it fills the field. 2. Border strip method : In this field is divided into strips 10m to 20m vide and 100 m to 300 m long. 3. Basin method : In this one basin or rectangular check is constructed for each tree or plant. This method is useful for irrigating orchards. 4. Furrow irrigation: In this method only half to one fourth of the land is wetted. (b) Sprinkler irrigation : Where irrigation water is costly, water is supplied in the form of spray through perforated pipes which may be either fixed or revolving. (c) Sub-surface irrigation : In this water is supplied to sub-surface through pipe system. The purpose is to minimize evaporation losses and to effect maximum economy in water use. | |
