Plastic design of beams :- The structural strength of a member depends upon the criterion of design adopted. In elastic design, the attainment of yield stress at any section of a member is assumed to limit its load carrying capacity whereas in plastic design failure of members due to fracture, fatigue and instability are considered to be premature failures and steps are taken to eliminate these so that a member may attain its maximum possible strength. The following are two methods for determination of plastic moments 1. Statical method : It gives the lower bound of ultimate load. These loads calculated should satisfy M ≤ Mp condition. This is suitable for simple structures. 2. Mechanism method : This is convenient to solve structures with many degrees of redundancy. In these methods, possible plastic hinges are located. | |
