Rankine based his theory upon the following assumptions to calculate active earth pressure
1. The soil mass is homogeneous dry, cohesionless and semi-infinite.
2. The ground surface is a plane which may be horizontal or inclined.
3. The back of the wall is smooth and vertical.
4. The wall yields about the base.
