Alkaline Batteries Lead-acid batteries have many drawbacks including shorter life, sulphation of plates if left discharged for a long period and need much care and maintenance. These drawbacks are overcome to a large extent by alkaline batteries. Like lead-acid cells, the alkaline cells also consist of positive and negative plates immersed in an electrolyte (alkali).
