Behaviour of Metallic Conductors in electric field When a metallic conductor (solid or hollow) is placed in an electric field, there is a momentary flow of charges (i.e., free electrons). Once the flow of charges ceases, the conductor is said to be in electrostatic equilibrium. It has been seen experimentally that under the conditions of electrostatic equilibrium, a conductor (solid or hollow) shows the following properties [See Fig.(a)]
