Amongst the three transistor configurations, the common emitter configuration is widely used for the following reasons:

• Only the CE configuration provides the voltage and current gain greater than unity. In CB configuration current gain is less and in CC configurations voltage gain is less than unity.
• The ratio of output resistance to input resistance is small (between 10 Ω to 100 Ω) in a common emitter configuration which makes configuration, an ideal one for coupling between various transistor stages. In other configurations, this ratio is very large and hence this type of coupling is not possible.
