Electromagnetism The first discovery of any connection between electricity and magnetism was made by Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish physicist in 1819. On one occasion at the end of his lecture, he inadvertently placed a wire carrying current parallel to a compass needle. To his surprise, needle was deflected. Upon reversing the current in the wire, the needle deflected in the opposite direction. Oersted found that the compass deflection was due to a magnetic field established around the current carrying conductor. This accidental discovery was the first evidence of a long suspected link between electricity and magnetism. The production of magnetism from electricity (which we call electromagnetism) has opened a new era. The operation of all electrical machinery is due to the applications of magnetic effects of electric current in one form or the other | |
