Important Points About Charging of Lead-Acid Batteries

In order to ensure normal life for a battery, it should be maintained in the charged condition.While charging a battery, the following points may be kept in view

• The charging source must be d.c. one. If a.c. supply is available, it must be converted to d.c. before being applied to the battery.
•  During charging, it should be ensured that polarity is correct. The polarity is correct when the positive terminal of d.c. charging source is connected to the positive terminal of the battery.
•  The charging voltage must be more than the e.m.f. of the battery to be charged. Approximately 2.5 volts per cell should be applied. For example, if a battery to be charged has 6 cells, then applied direct voltage should be about 15 volts.
• The charging current should be set at proper value.
