INDUCTION METER Induction meter is based on the induction motor principle. When a drum or a disc of a nonmagnetic conducting material is placed in a rotating magnetic field, eddy current is induced in it.The reaction between the rotating flux and the eddy current produced by it create a torque that rotates the disc or drum. The current or voltage to be measured produces the rotating flux. The eddy current is also proportional to the flux. Therefore, ............. (1) As a rotating magnetic field can be produced only by a polyphase AC, an induction instrument can be used for measurement of ac current or voltage only. As two phase has to be created out of a single phase, it is done by split phase or shaded pole arrangement. Accordingly, induction instruments are classified as:

Induction Watthour Meters or Energy Meters Induction watthour meters are universally used for the measurement of energy in a.c. circuits. It is because they have lower friction and higher torque-weight ratio. Moreover, they are inexpensive and can measure energy with remarkable accuracy over wide ranges of load, power factor, voltage and temperature with little or no maintenance. There are two types of induction watthour meter viz:
