Right-hand palm rule. Orient the thumb of your right hand perpendicular to the grip of the fingers such that curvature of the fingers points in the direction of current in the circular coil. Then thumb will point in the direction of the magnetic field near the centre of the circular coil. | |

Right-hand Thumb Rule to Determine the Direction of H The direction of the magnetic field intensity (H) can be obtained by the vector cross-product from Eq. (1). But there is also another method of determining the direction of H. This method is easy to remember and is called Ampere's Right Hand Thumb Rule. This is illustrated in Fig. 4(b). Imagine that the current carrying conductor is held in the right hand as shown in the figure, such that the thumb indicates the direction of the current. Then the rest of the fingers indicate the direction of the magnetic flux lines as shown. | |
