Starting of Single-phase Induction Motors It is known from the previous section that a single-phase induction motor does not have self-starting torque, but once given a slight torque in any direction, the motor continues to rotate and reach near synchronous speed in that particular direction. Hence, the starting methods should produce initial torque to rotate the motor in any direction. The different methods adopted are as follows:
