Definition of "associativity" |
CPU cache associativity specifies how cached data is associated with locations in main memory. In a fully associative cache subsystem, the caching controller can place a block of main memory data anywhere in cache memory. But the extra circuitry can be expensive, and it might slow down cache reads and writes. In a direct mapped cache (also known as the one-way set associative cache), a block of main memory data always loads into the same cache location. Having a single association between cache and main memory, however, can reduce the cache hit rate. A compromise, in which the cache has n (typically between two and four) associations, is known as an n-way set associative cache. / In a cache, the number of lines in a set. An n-way set associative cache has n lines in each set. (Note: the term “block” is also used for “line.”) |
